A Few Things to Consider Corner

from the desks of Catherine and Mikkel Saks

Hanging Art

"Generally speaking, many people tend to hang their artwork too high. If you have ever visited castles in Europe, Victorian collections, or places like the Barnes Collection in Pennsylvannia, you will see paintings hung from floor to ceiling.

However, the current aesthetic is lower. If you compare clothes racks in department stores today with the height 30 years ago (for those of us old enough to remember such things!) you'll find that everything is quite low and within reach. So the proper height for a painting is such that the mid-point is eye-level for a person of modest stature.

As with any rule, there are exceptions. For example, if the main subject matter of the painting is towards the bottom of the canvas it may be appropriate to go up a few inches. Another exception which arises frequently is the placement of large paintings over a high fireplace mantle. When that occurs, the best solution is to have the bottom of the frame within two to five inches of the mantle, thus leaving a larger space between the top of the frame and the ceiling. You want the painting to be 'grounded' by the fireplace so it doesn't visually float away.

There are often other considerations… we encourage our clients to discuss their particular situations with our staff.  Our years of experience are a valuable resource."

Alexander Dzigurski Pacific Twilight 24 x 30 oil

Alexander Dzigurski 1911 -1995 "Pacific Twilight" 24 x 30 oil

Alexander Dzigurski, 1911 - 1995, who is known for his seascapes, landscapes and some portraiture, is associated with the art of California, although he was born in the farming community of Backa, located in Stari Becej, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The son of a wheat farmer, he was one of four siblings. Alexander's father considered his son's artistic desires an unproductive pursuit; contrarily, his mother was most interested in her son's talent and understood her son's wishes to extend his artistic desires. His work is featured in a number of museums and private collections.

Paul Kauvar Smith 1893 – 1977

“Smith’s work bears a strong stamp of his personality and vision…the sum total of years of sensitive and creative reflection and work.”  Otto Karl Bach, former Director Denver Art Museum.

Paul Kauvar Smith moved to Colorado to study under John E. Thompson at the Denver Academy of Fine and Applied Arts. Thompson, who is considered to be the pioneer of modernism in Denver, was a strong influence on Smith.
